More bands have been added to Roadburn Festival 2014 curated by Mikael Åkerfeldt.
Denmark's Papir will create their own extraordinary type of semi-improvised psychedelic rock by transcending the usual labels. Moody and unexpected twists and turns seems to be their trademark. Psych legends of the future? The band will appear twice at Roadburn but both sets will bear no resemblance to each other. Exciting!
REINE FISKE/NICKLAS BARKER
Reine Fiske is in my opinion the best guitar player from Sweden and with that, one of the best in the world. He’s got an ethereal quality that I’ve not heard anywhere else. And teaming up with the lord of dark psych and hellfire, Nicklas Barker just cannot fail. I’ve no idea what these cats are up to for Roadburn 2014, but I do know it’ll be fantastic. I do know there will be a Fender Stratocaster (yes, Reine?) on stage, and a mellotron. I will be there. Watching. Worshipping.
I’m so happy to announce that Änglagård is taking part in my curated day at Roadburn 2014. If you don’t know them they are one of the 3 (together with Landberk and Anekdoten) pioneers of the second wave of Swedish prog/psychedelia. Just like the other 2 bands their sounds are heavily focused around the ghostly presence of the mellotron, yet the three bands sound nothing the same. I last saw them ”alive” last Summer and I was quite floored. Their show will be a winding musical journey of light and shade. Beauty and…the beast? Never mind my ramblings. They are amazing and you will love them. Just shut up!

"Today, Saturday 21st of December I'm reached by the horrible news that Björn J.son Lindh has made the final journey. Even if I knew he was very ill I can't understand it. Not only was he an idol of mine, he also contributed some immortal playing to the "Heritage" record. I spent a few hours with him, and thought he was the coolest dude ever. His music lives on. I still listen to his solo records with great joy. J.son was an institution to the Swedish music scene. Our collective condolences goes out to his loved ones. I am currently taken aback by sadness of his passing and I'm drinking a glass of wine to his honor, listening to "Ramadan". Björn, i didn't really know you, but yet I did. Your music is in my DNA. You will live on. Lots of love from the Opeth camp."

Every year, the organization SKAP (Swedish composers and lyricists) deliver scholarships to Swedish musicians who they feel have contributed to Swedish music and culture. This year Mikael Åkerfeldt was awarded an exclusive scholarship for his services to the Swedish and international music scene.
Mikael was presented with the scholarship and diploma at an intimate event in the south side of Stockholm on the 9th of December.
"I'm quite honored to receive this. Apparently you can't apply for this scholarship, a board of legendary musicians decide that you're the right person for this award. I had never even heard of SKAP before they contacted me. I'm happy and surprised there's some focus on heavy Swedish music and genuinely chuffed that they focused in on me. Through time I've been handed some awards and whatnot, but this one resonates more in me personally. No glitz and glamour, just some appreciation for what we and I do musically. It's well appreciated!"
