Mike is proud to announce the one and only Mr Lenny Kaye, The Vintage Caravan and Ron van Herpen & Oeds Beydals as the last three acts to complete his very own curated day at the Roadburn Festival. For more info please click here (www.roadburn.com)
Maybe you can also add the announcements in Mike’s own words?
”They come from the land of the ice and snow” The Vintage Caravan is a fairly new acquaintance to me. And a very pleasant one I have to say. Iceland has produced many fine heavy and progressive bands and I’m all for pushing for a new generation of musicians that cater to that heritage. Very happy to have these guys taking part of my curated event at Roadburn.
Lenny Kaye (with Harsh Toke)
"Lenny is a legend and the nicest guy in rock. Not Dave Grohl. First met him in Greece when him and Patti Smith came up to us. She said: ”Is this the band you’ve been raving about?” Lenny said: ”Opeth! Fuck yeah!! Needeless to say, we’re now besties and he’s a natural choice to be invited to Roadburn. Lenny is some type of psych/rock encyclopedia as well as rock/psych guitarist extraordinaire. Ladies and gentlemen, looks like we have a psychedelic jam on our hands. Can we wait? No we can’t!”
Lenny Kaye comments: "I am honoured to be performing at the Roadburn festival, celebrating the legacy of Nuggets and the mind-expansive music that gave me so much inspiration and hallucinogenic direction. Opeth is a band that breaks apart genre definitions while remaining true to their progressive and uncompromising metallic vision, as does the entire festival, which honours the quest for new boundaries in soundscapes and sonic exploration. I look forward to being a part of the audience and then ascending the stage to see where Harsh Toke will lead my sense of improvisation and discovery. It will be a Nugget if you dug it!"
Jam Sessions: Ron van Herpen, Oeds Beydals
The former guitarists of The Devil's Blood will do jam sessions at Roadburn's Stage01. Expect psychedelia, 70’s inspired (hard) rock and dark funk (?). I only saw The Devil’s Blood once. They looked cool, and sounded even cooler. I’m very psyched to see what these dudes will do up there. Psychedelic freak outs or surf rock? Again, I can’t wait to be enlightened.
More bands have been added to Roadburn Festival 2014 curated by Mikael Åkerfeldt.
Denmark's Papir will create their own extraordinary type of semi-improvised psychedelic rock by transcending the usual labels. Moody and unexpected twists and turns seems to be their trademark. Psych legends of the future? The band will appear twice at Roadburn but both sets will bear no resemblance to each other. Exciting!
REINE FISKE/NICKLAS BARKER
Reine Fiske is in my opinion the best guitar player from Sweden and with that, one of the best in the world. He’s got an ethereal quality that I’ve not heard anywhere else. And teaming up with the lord of dark psych and hellfire, Nicklas Barker just cannot fail. I’ve no idea what these cats are up to for Roadburn 2014, but I do know it’ll be fantastic. I do know there will be a Fender Stratocaster (yes, Reine?) on stage, and a mellotron. I will be there. Watching. Worshipping.
I’m so happy to announce that Änglagård is taking part in my curated day at Roadburn 2014. If you don’t know them they are one of the 3 (together with Landberk and Anekdoten) pioneers of the second wave of Swedish prog/psychedelia. Just like the other 2 bands their sounds are heavily focused around the ghostly presence of the mellotron, yet the three bands sound nothing the same. I last saw them ”alive” last Summer and I was quite floored. Their show will be a winding musical journey of light and shade. Beauty and…the beast? Never mind my ramblings. They are amazing and you will love them. Just shut up!
Every year, the organization SKAP (Swedish composers and lyricists) deliver scholarships to Swedish musicians who they feel have contributed to Swedish music and culture. This year Mikael Åkerfeldt was awarded an exclusive scholarship for his services to the Swedish and international music scene.
Mikael was presented with the scholarship and diploma at an intimate event in the south side of Stockholm on the 9th of December.
"I'm quite honored to receive this. Apparently you can't apply for this scholarship, a board of legendary musicians decide that you're the right person for this award. I had never even heard of SKAP before they contacted me. I'm happy and surprised there's some focus on heavy Swedish music and genuinely chuffed that they focused in on me. Through time I've been handed some awards and whatnot, but this one resonates more in me personally. No glitz and glamour, just some appreciation for what we and I do musically. It's well appreciated!"
Mike sure is loving his curator job for the Roadburn Festival. He personally invited a few more of his favourite bands which can now be added to the bill: Candlemass (who will exclusively play their entire 'Ancient Dreams' album, celebrating its 25th anniversary), Elephant9, Obliteration, Promise and the Monster, Avatarium and Trettioåriga Kriget.

Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt To Curate 2014 Roadburn Festival
We're elated to announce that Mikael Åkerfeldt has agreed to curate Roadburn Festival 2014 on Friday, April 11th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. As curator, Mikael will personally select the bands for his special event, and play a headline show with Opeth, too!
Musically, Mikael has consistently pushed the boundaries. Over the last two decades, he guided Opeth's evolution, drawing the band out from under the doom-laden shade of occult-infused Scandinavian death metal and into a place in the sun as revered progressive rock / metal innovators, never once sacrificing the authentic spirit of previous artistic endeavours.
Mikael's steadfast devotion to aesthetic progression and perfection has proven ground-breaking and highly influential for an entire new generation of musicians practicing the art of progressive rock and psychedelica. At the same time, he has steadfastly honoured the mystical pioneers of late 1960s and early 1970s psychedelic folk, rock and prog -- some of Opeth's albums are named after obscure psychedelic prog outfits or song titles -- all of which is in perfect sync with Roadburn Festival.
Opeth's body of work is highly respected by Roadburn audiences, which makes Mikael the ideal choice to carry on the tradition that began in 2008 with David Tibet / Current 93, and continued with Neurosis, Tom G Warrior, Sunn 0))), Voivod and Jus Oborn / Electric Wizard.
"It's with great honour that I accepted the invitation to be the curator for the 2014 Roadburn festival", says Mikael Åkerfeldt, "I'm pretty damn far from being a professional booker / promoter, and I've never been part in choosing bands for an event apart from bands that Opeth has toured with. So this is a first for me, but I have to say I'm very excited."
"I've reached out to a handful of my favourite bands from the past and present. As of now it looks like it will be an amazing musical event. Still brainstorming about possible bands for this glorious festival but I already know that I'm going to be like a kid at Christmas. It will be amazing! Plain and simple. Obviously Opeth will perform as well, but to be quite honest with you, our own performance doesn't get me nearly as excited as the thought of experiencing the bands that have shown interest. It will be remarkable and memorable. A celebration, bitches!"
We are so excited and proud to be working with Mikael and to have Opeth headline his curated Roadburn 2014 event. It will truly be a celebration of progressive rock, psychedelic folk, the heavy 70s and beyond. We look forward to this collaboration and cannot wait to see how he will expand Roadburn Festival's musical horizons as well as explore more familiar territory from new angles. We will definitely be in for some artistic surprises.
Roadburn Festival 2014 will run for four days from Thursday, April 10th to Sunday, April 13th, 2014 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Well, we just got back home after over 200 shows in support of "Heritage". It's been a fantastic experience with many odd, great, wonderful memories. Our collective brains have a lot to take in. We want to say thanks for all your support. We've had an amazing run, travelling around the globe multiple times to play for you guys. Ah, the memories. We've played in the Maldives in front of a muslim crowd. Saw women in niqab's and burqha's headbanding to "Deliverance". Played in what looked like a rainforest fortress in Singapore. Almost got caught in the recent Oklahoma tornados. Got snowed in in Sweden of all places. Hit my head in a bus in Minneapolis and cancelled (gasp!) a show. Stadium rock in Helsinki. 2 runs in Australia, 2 runs in Japan. The amazing response in South America. Fucking great response pretty much everywhere. Mastodon, Ghost, Katatonia thank you! Hecklers & Obsessive fans shoulder to shoulder. Lovely North America taking such good care of us. Europe, Scandinavia took us once again under its wing. Getting pretentios now! I'll stop! Just want to say THANK YOU! From us...Opeth!"
Mikael Åkerfeldt was recently interviewed in relation to a Heavy metal marathon aired on Swedish national television. The Sam Dunn produced "Metal evolution" episodes were aired as a marthon showcase on October 13th. Since the series itself had left out the late 80's/early 90's Death metal revolution emerging from Stockholm/Sweden, Mikael was brought in to shed some light on the matter. Watch the clip of Mikael discussing bands like Mefisto, Entombed, Therion and Dismember at http://www.svtplay.se/video/35
Clip is in Swedish. Sorry!
